Untitled
(2021)
This untitled project was made because I want to share how many people view lesbian relationships. I want the viewer to reflect on their thoughts about them and their assumptions of my relationship as they look at the photographs. I have done this through a series of obscured nude portraits of me and my partner. In these images we are going throughout our day-to-day life, participating in acts of intimacy and daily tasks that we do such as cooking, cleaning, or lying in bed together. The nude aspect brings to light how many people immediately sexualize lesbian relationships and treat it as something for their own pleasure. The photographs are large, scanned, gelatin silver prints that I have obscured with torn, plain newsprint, and laid over the paper during its exposure. As I hide parts of the images it acts as a means of dictating what the viewer can and cannot see. The rough edges of the newsprint give the images a torn look, as if I had ripped apart the photograph. Feeling like I have power while making these images is important to me because I will never truly be in charge of what others think. My goal with this work is to create a sense of normalcy around the topic of lesbian relationships and to help others with similar experiences feel less alone.
